Maadi

My sister, while signing off from an email conversation, called me a maadi. I am aware that in marathi, this word translates to "child-bearing female". Hopefully it means something else in Bangalore.

And in Tamil, "maadi" refers to "floor". As in "second floor" or "third floor" of a house.

And in any case, I think I know why Kannadigas and Tamilians have a love hate relationship. The Kannada word for buttermilk/curd sounds ominously like one colloquial tamil word for pubic hair ("masuru"). One can only imagine the confusion ;)

I think it is clear what needs to be done to resolve this love-hate relationship. Kannadigas should quit asking Tamilians if they want more pubic hair in their rice and in return, Tamilians should quit asking Kannadigas for more Cauvery water.

IIRC in Kannada, maadi roughly translates to "karo" (do) in Hindi.

I've heard words like swalpa adjust maadi etc.

I see. And what does IIRC mean?

In Bangalore 'Maadi' means "to do" something. Well, she must have meant to tell you something to do. While leaving, people usually say something like 'Enjoy Maadi' or 'Masti Maadi' that means 'have fun'.

Actually "Enjoy maadi" was precisely what she said to me. That explains it.

This, I didn't expect :-)
Maybe you'll also learn a bit of Tamil when we're there. Unfortunately, maadi is just about the only Kannada word I know, apart from the numbers 1 to 10! That's how far I got in my initial enthusiasm to learn Kannada till I learnt that non-Kannadigas were the most predominant species in Bangalore, and I really didn't need to learn the local language in order to survive here.

lonestar : ah wokay. Maybe I was not aware of this acronym because I never remember things correctly.

jeet : Fad of the moment is it? Maybe tomorrow will bring another new word I'll have to worry about.

zambezi : I am sure you know a lot of marathi words.

M : Does that mean you people are going to speak in Tamil when you come here? You should learn other Kannadiga words because I have been suffering from blogger's block and it would help if I could convert every new word I hear into a new blogpost.

in punjabi " maa-di" has a very different connotation. The correct usage is "teri maa-di". It can be used to start as well as end arguments. It can also be used in the middle of an argument just before fistcuffs replace vocal cords. It is a very versatile phrase and can also be adapted to other situations - greeting, salutation, frustrations. But mostly it is a a unhappy and angry phrase, that blames 'yo mamma' for all that is wrong in this world.

LOL! You can survive in banaglore just with 'maadi'. run maadi, walk maadi, kiss maadi, enjoy maadi, chill maadi...to an extent that people have started using it with no respect for rules. water maadi, taxi maadi. damn it, it has to be used after a verb!!!!! You can also say Maadi maadi (meaning do a child bearing female)
